ResumoDiamond-like carbon (DLC) films have attracted considerable interest over the past three decades due to their high hardness, low friction coefficient, high wear resistance, high thermal conductivity, high elastic modulus, and chemical inertness [1]. The major disadvantage of hard DLC film deposition is a relatively low adhesion of these films on metallic substrates. To overcome the low adhesion problems of these films on metallic substrates, different coating concepts have been proposed, such as: thin metal interlayer; surface implantation; multilayer coating; variation of the self-bias voltage; and the use of surface thermal treatments. Plasma nitriding is the most widely used technique for surface treatment of stainless steels due to its industrial availability, low cost, and high production rate. However, the carbon addition to the treatment atmosphere can alter the structural development in the alloyed zone and offer several beneficial effects to the nitriding process [2]. Plasma carbonitriding is now a widely used industrial process to improve the mechanical and tribological properties of stainless steels by replacing the H2 by CH4 in conventional plasma nitriding [2,3]. In this study, DLC coatings were deposited on different steels and Ti6Al4V substrates using an industrial size deposition chamber. Plasma carbonitriding was carried out in DC plasma, while an asymmetrical bipolar pulsed-DC power supply was used to deposit DLC films. The films were deposited up to a thickness of approximately 2 ìm on polished substrates, using methane as the hydrocarbon sources. The results obtained indicate that our new, low cost, pulsed-DC PECVD system is a viable system to synthesize quality DLC coatings on metallic substrates for industrial applications. The protective DLC coatings with low friction coefficients, low total stress, high degree of hardness, good adherence, and high uniformity at a reasonable growth rate were deposited. The technical viability to produce DLC coating at industrial scale was obtained, and the results will be discussed.
